Four friends meet for a weekend of bespoke adventure in Bend, Oregon

We make our way through towering Douglas firs and over the Cascade Range, and the forest eventually gives way to dramatic views of the high desert to the east called the Oregon Outback.

We wind past Three Fingered Jack and Mt. Washington, and to the north and south spy their volcanic cousins: Mt. Jefferson and Three Sisters, respectively, and as we race down the eastern slope towards the lights of Bend, the landscape calls attention to the passing of time, whether in vast lava fields of ancient eruptions or canyons carved deep by water and wind.

We pull into The Campfire Hotel, and check in. The Campfire has a distinctly Bend-frontier vibe: equal parts outdoor adventure, frontier, posh, and desert-dusty, and as we head to the lobby to meet our friends Tyler and Katie, a group of long-distance motorcycle riders pull into the parking lot as a another group exits the Canteen towards the pool, cocktails in hand.

We head out to dinner at Monkless Brewing, famous for its Belgian beers, sans monks, and order a round of tasters to go with the poutine and bratwurst.

We have no plan for the next few days, we discuss potential options: mountain biking? paddleboarding? floating on the river? climbing? Trail running? All of it?

The following morning we drive up to Hosmer Lake, one of the numerous, picture perfect alpine lakes just a short drive from Bend, for a sunrise paddleboarding session.

Hosmer Lake is something of a ecological success story. By the mid 1900’s the lake was filled with trash fish, including carp, but after intensive restoration efforts it now has extensive populations of trout, salmon, and other species common to the area.

On the drive back towards town we drop Erika off to send Funner, a fantastic mountain biking trail that is part of the Wanago Complex, and a blast of a downhill that winds its way back towards Bend.

We grab showers and lunch, and then set off southeast of town towards the Newberry National Volcanic Monument and Boyd Cave, a 1,180’ long lava tube on the northern flank of the the volcano that is only accessible via a 10-foot diameter hole in the ceiling.

For dinner we go to the Crux Fermentation Project for tacos and series of compelling Hazy IPAs: Kia Kaha, Strange Behavior, and The Velvet Underpants, and we buy a six-pack to take for climbing tomorrow morning.

The next morning we load up our gear and head north to Smith Rock, and the distinct complex of basalt tuffs and towers carved by the Crooked River is glowing gold in the early morning light. Being a weekday (and early), there are only a handful of other climbers, and we get to work on a project of Erika’s which she sends to loud applause.

As the temps climb we decide to head back to town to shower, and then Tyler and I head for fly fishing session on Tumalo Creek. Tumalo does not feature large brown and rainbow, but it great for lightweight gear *and* solitude.

As we walk from the brewery to Drake Park, we see increasingly more people heading the same direction, and as we reach the park there is music and dancing and food in every direction, with every brewery and eater in Bend represented.

The next morning Tyler suggests we clear our heads with a run on the River Trail, which despite cutting right through the heart of town, is tucked down alongside the Deschutes River and feels like another world altogether outside of time.

Farewells are made, and as we drive back, windows down, to the cacophony of work and responsibility, the warm breeze is a welcome companion.
